It means shortsightedness. In this case, it means that the first observers did not see the whole picture of what was happening.
ReplyDeleteMyopia is the medical term for people who have trouble seeing things in the distance. The term is used in other settings to mean those afflicted with it cannot clearly see the long term affects of a situation. In the quote you are asking about the "first observers" of television were afflicted with myopia because they only were able to see how television, in the early days, seemed beneficial by bringing families together to watch programs. These observers could not see clearly the long term or far distant impacts television would have on families in the future after many years.
ReplyDeleteI have to add something. Too many answers are mistaken when they refer to myopia as missing the "big picture" or not seeing the "broader perspective."
There are two other terms often used to describe not seeing the "bigger picture" or the "broader perspective". These two other terms are looking at things "with blinders on" or having "tunnel vision". "Blinders" are the little flaps horses sometimes wear that prevent them from seeing things beside them. The blinders keep them from being distracted by things around them and only allow the horse to focus on what is just in front of them. Similarly, to have "tunnel vision" means the tunnel prevents you from seeing anything but what is in front of you. You cannot see a broader perspective due to the tunnel.
I have myopia as far as my eyesight is concerned. I can see just as broad a perspective or just as big a picture as everyone else - as long as it's not very far away. Again, if someone says your thinking is afflicted by myopia, they do NOT mean you are thinking narrowly, or missing a broad perspective, or ignoring the big picture. They mean you are not considering issues farther into the future.
Hope this helps - more.

myopia means shortsighted, or unaware of the larger picture.
ReplyDeleteMyopia is also actually the medical condition name for nearsightedness. The word has been used commonly though to refer to not knowing things in a broader perspective.
